Collins’ Early Journalism Career
Kaitlan began her journalism career in 2014 right after graduating from college. She studied at Prattville High School and later graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and journalism in May 2014. Collins worked for The Daily Caller from June 2014 as an entertainment reporter.
She also covered the 2016 presidential election before she was appointed the White House correspondent for the Daily Caller in January 2017. Collins then met the then CNN President Jeff Zucker at a White House correspondent event in 2017. She did her interview at CNN and was hired in July 2017 joining the White House team.
Career at CNN (2017 – 2022)
Collins is known for criticizing Trump’s government, which rubbed the former president wrong. She at one time asked him a series of questions about Vladimir Putin and Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen which he ignored. Collins was later excluded from the press conference that afternoon at the White House Rose Garden.
She was then told by senior White House officials that her questions were “inappropriate for that venue.” Trump’s deputy director of staff for communications, Bill Shine, disagreed with the term “ban,” but “refused to tell reporters what word he would use to define the White House’s decision to exclude her from attending the event.”
Collins’ prohibition, according to CNN, was “retaliatory” and “not representative of open and free journalism.” The prohibition was dubbed “wholly improper, wrongheaded, and weak” by the White House Correspondents Association.
Fox News President Jay Wallace released a statement in solidarity with Collins, stating his company “[stood] in strong solidarity with CNN for the right to full access for our journalists as part of a free and unfettered press.”
