Hettiger graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in News-Editorial Journalism. She also has a Master of Science in Broadcast Journalism obtained from the University of Illinois.
Hettiger started her career as a broadcast intern at WICD TV in Illinois. She interned in both the sports and news departments and helped reporters and photographers shoot 15 high school football games. The next year, she served as a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She taught the Introduction to Journalism class while working on a Master’s degree.
In May 2008, she joined Cheer Unlimited where she operated a private cheerleading company in southern Illinois as a co-owner and choreographer. It was so unfortunate that she tore almost every ligament in her right knee in a cheerleading accident at an Illinois basketball game.
She didn’t realize it at the time, but it turned out to be one of the finest things that had ever occurred to her. It taught her never to quit, which has served her well throughout her journalism career.
Laura joined WCBD-TV 2 as a multimedia journalist where she reported live three days a week for the early and late evening newscasts. She also anchored sports segments periodically while shooting, editing, and writing her own stories. Hettiger joined KMOV in July 2012 and works as an anchor and host of Great Day, a mid-morning lifestyle talk show.
During her first three years at KMOV, you could find her at almost every breaking news scene from 3:00 in the morning until noon. She won her first Emmy Award for General Assignment Reporting for her coverage during the Ferguson unrest. Giving back is one of Laura’s greatest passions. She is on the Advisory Board of the St. Louis Crisis Nursery and is a big fan of Pedal the Cause.
Laura also supports the objective of The Little Bit Foundation, a local non-profit that works on removing barriers to learning for students in St. Louis public schools. In August 2018, she merged her passions for The Little Bit Foundation and ran to launch Laura’s Run 4 Kids, an annual 5K and family fun run in downtown St. Louis. The family-run helps St. Louis kids and it has raised approximately $300,000 in the first five years.
