Who is Robin Roberts?

Robin Roberts is a well-known American television broadcaster and producer who founded Rock’n Robin Productions. She anchors the Good Morning America morning show on ABC alongside George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan. Robin began her journalism career as a local TV and radio station sports anchor and later joined ESPN as a sportscaster for 15 years. She then joined ABC News in June 1995 as a reporter for Good Morning America.

As an experienced TV host with over 40 years of experience, Robert’s salary is estimated to be in eight figures. She reportedly earns an annual salary of $18 million. Her exact net worth is currently not known, however. she is estimated to be worth $55 million.

Robin Roberts’s wife is a massage therapist

Roberts is married to her wife and longtime partner Amber Laign. Roberts and Amber first met on a blind date which their friends set up. They began dating in 2005 but publicly announced their relationship in 2013 when Robin came out on a Facebook post.

Throughout their relationship, they have been met with tough challenges but kept going strong together. Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and five years later she had to undergo a bone marrow transplant due to myelodysplastic syndrome.

In December 2021, Amber was diagnosed with breast cancer. She began medication right away and completed her radiation in July 2022. After a rough year, Robin gave a health update about her wife saying she was doing well healthwise and ready to start a new chapter.

Wedding

Robin Roberts and Amber Laign got married on Friday, September 8, 2023. The wedding was officiated by Robin’s childhood pastor in their backyard in front of their close family and friends. Their white wedding gowns were custom-made by designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka. Her brother Lawrence walked her down the aisle. They were able to seal their union after 18 years of being together.

Robin Roberts was born in Tuskegee, Alabama

Roberts was born in Tuskegee, Alabama to her parents Lucimarian and Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts. Her father served for 32 years in military service as a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen and a colonel in the United States Air Force. He died in October 2004 at the age of 81 of a heart attack.

Robin was raised in Pass Christian, Mississippi alongside her three elder siblings Sally-Ann Roberts, Lawrence E. Roberts, Jr, and Dorothy Roberts McEwen. Her sister Sally-Ann donated her bonemarrow in 2012 to save her life in September 2012.

Robin went to Pass Christian High School where she played basketball and tennis along with other sports. She then joined Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in communication in 1983.

Robin began her Broadcasting career in 1983

Roberts began her career in 1983 as a sports anchor and reporter for WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She later moved to WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1984. In 1986, Roberts joined WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee as a sports anchor and reporter.

Between 1988 and 1990, she worked at WAGA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia as a sports anchor and reporter, and also hosted a radio show on V-103 during her time in Atlanta.

ESPN

Roberts joined ESPN as a sportscaster in February 1990 and worked there until 2005. She became well-known for her catchphrase, “Go on with your bad self!” which she used while working on SportsCenter. In June 1995, Roberts started working for ABC News, where she was a featured reporter for Good Morning America.

Roberts worked for both ESPN and Good Morning America, primarily as the news anchor on GMA. In 2005, she was promoted to co-anchor of Good Morning America. When Diane Sawyer left to anchor ABC World News in December 2009, Roberts was joined by George Stephanopoulos as co-anchor of GMA.

Their partnership led the show back to the top of the ratings, making it the number-one morning show in April 2012, after NBC’s Today had held the top spot for the previous 16 years.

In the fall of 2005, Roberts reported on the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Her hometown of Pass Christian was hit particularly hard, with her old high school reduced to rubble. She also hosted the Academy Awards pre-show for ABC on February 22, 2009, and again in 2011.

Other Work

In 2010, Roberts made a guest appearance on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana in season 4, episode 10, “Can You See the Real Me?” She also drove the Pace Car for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 2010. Robin Roberts was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012, for her significant contributions to the game of women’s basketball through her broadcasting work and play.

Moreover, in 2014, she was named one of ESPNW’s Impact 25. On May 19, 2018, Robin co-anchored the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Following the death of Alex Trebek in November 2020, she served as a guest host on Jeopardy! for five episodes, which aired from July 19 to 23, 2021. Currently, she hosts a Disney+ interview series called “Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts,” which premiered in 2021.
