Sam was born and raised by his parents James H. and Sylvia Champion in Paducah, Kentucky. His father served in Vietnam as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. Sadly, he died on October 25, 2010. Champion was raised alongside his elder sister Teresa. He has a niece and nephew called Sydney and James.

Sam and his husband don’t have children at the moment. Back in 2021, the weather anchor and his husband shared a video of him holding a newborn with the caption “Welcome home”. Sam Champion ABC7, GMA

Champion has been a weather anchor since the mid-1980s. He began working at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky, and WJKS in Jacksonville, Florida. Sam joined Eyewitness News for WABC-TV in New York in 1988 and later on anchored at Good Morning America around 2004. In September 2006, he began appearing on Good Morning America and ABC News.

He left ABC in December 2013 and accepted a job offer at The Weather Channel where he was a weather host and managing editor. While at The Weather Channel, Champion hosted his own morning show, called America’s Morning Headquarters. A year later, he left AMHQ and became a contributor to The Weather Channel’s primetime programs.

Champion then returned to ABC to fill in for Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee who was on maternity leave. He officially joined WABC-TV in May 2019 where he was anchoring the morning and noon newscast as well as the weather anchor for GMA. a fill-in basis and returned to become the weekday morning and noon weather anchor at WABC-TV in June 2019.

Apart from being a weather anchor, Sam is also a very good dancer. He was a contestant in Dancing with the Stars Season 31. He was paired with professional Filipino dancer Cheryl Burke.
